Chapter 12 · 12.3
Fonts look different
A document you receive from someone else sometimes looks a little different in Euro-Office. A line breaks differently, a table becomes wider, or text shifts to the next page. This is almost always caused by the font.
Why does this happen?
Euro-Office can only display fonts that are installed on the Euro-Office server. If a font from your document isn't available there, Euro-Office uses a different font instead. The name of the original font stays in your document, and it also appears in the font list. If you later open the file again in Word on a computer that has that font, it will look exactly as it was created.

Well-known fonts have a matching substitute
For the most common Microsoft Office fonts, the server has an open source font with exactly the same character width. Your text flows the same way, only the shape of the letters is slightly different.
| Font in your document | Euro-Office uses |
|---|---|
| Calibri | Carlito |
| Cambria | Caladea |
| Arial | Liberation Sans |
| Times New Roman | Liberation Serif |
| Courier New | Liberation Mono |
Other fonts, such as Verdana, Tahoma, Georgia, Garamond, Century Gothic, or a custom corporate font, aren't available on the server. These are replaced with a font that resembles them as closely as possible. This can cause the text to wrap differently.
What can you do?
- Choose a font from the list. Are you creating a document that will mainly be used in Euro-Office? Then choose a font that's in the list, such as Carlito, Liberation Sans, Open Sans, or DejaVu Sans. That way, everyone in Euro-Office sees the same result.
- Working together with people who use Word? Use Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman. In Euro-Office, these line up with their substitutes, and in Word they look exactly as intended.
- Does it need to look exactly the same everywhere? Send the document as a PDF instead. A PDF looks the same on every computer and phone. See Printing and saving as PDF.
- Working with the program on your computer? The Euro-Office program for Windows, Mac, and Linux uses the fonts installed on your own computer. See Euro-Office as a program on your computer: what is it and when do you use it?.
- Check the font in the list. Click in the text that looks different. The font list on the Home tab shows which font the text uses.
